Lambda Pi Eta
National
Communication Honor Society

Nu Sigma Chapter at Central Michigan
University
About Lambda Pi
Eta (ΛΠΕ)
ΛΠΕ is
the official communication studies honor society of the National
Communication Association (NCA). As an accredited member of the Association of
College Honor Societies (ACHS), ΛΠΕ has nearly 420 active chapters
at colleges and universities worldwide.
ΛΠΕ
represents what Aristotle described in his book, Rhetoric, as the three
ingredients of persuasion: Logos (Lambda) meaning logic, Pathos (Pi)
relating to emotion, and Ethos (Eta) defined as character credibility
and ethics.
History
Lambda
Pi Eta was founded in 1985 at the University of Arkansas. Lambda
Pi Eta became a part of the National Communication Association (NCA) in
1988, and the official honor society of the NCA in July 1995.
Central Michigan University’s chapter of Lambda Pi Eta, designated Nu
Sigma, was founded on December 10, 2001.

Goals of Lambda
Pi Eta
The
goals of
ΛΠΕ are to:
• recognize,
foster, and reward outstanding scholastic achievement;
• stimulate
interest in the field of communication;
• promote and
encourage professional development among communication majors;
• provide an
opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas about the field;
• establish and
maintain close relationships and understanding between faculty and
students;
• explore options
for further graduate studies.
Why Join?
Though achievement is
its own reward, earning your Lambda Pi Eta honor society pin
demonstrates that you have accomplished something that makes you
special and puts you at the top of your chosen field. Having an
honor
society listed on your résumé provides a tangible sign of
your academic success.

Dues:
To
become a member of Lambda Pi Eta,
a one-time only membership
fee of $40.00 is required. There are no annual dues to pay.
If your membership application is accepted, there may also be a charge
(per person) for dinner at the induction ceremony.
Expectations of members:
Lambda
Pi Eta is an honor society, a reward for academic excellence;
therefore, no service commitment is required. Members of Lambda
Pi Eta will be added to an e-mail listserv and are expected to attend
the induction ceremony, which will be a part of the annual IPC
banquet. The IPC banquet is
held each spring (usually on a Saturday in April). Members are
welcome to invite their friends and family members to attend the brief
induction ceremony, at which time they will be formally inducted and
will receive their membership certificates and Lambda Pi Eta pins.
You may also choose to become an officer on the Lambda Pi Eta Executive
Board (eBoard). These positions will require very little of your
time, and look great on your resume! Officers are chosen
annually, and meet as needed to recruit new members. Officer
positions include President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary,
Recruiting Director, and Historian. If interested in one of these
positions, contact faculty advisor Lesley Withers at (989) 774-6673 or
e-mail Lesley.Withers@cmich.edu.

IPR
Majors/Communication Minors: Students pursuing majors in
Integrative Public Relations or minors in Interpersonal and Public
Communication may be inducted into Lambda Pi Eta, if they fulfill all
of the academic requirements above.
Alumni
Membership: Because
our
group was formed only a few years ago, we are also offering membership
to alumni
who may be interested in joining as honorary members. By
inducting
alumni as
well, we hope to provide another link to the Central Michigan
University community
for them. Alumni are a vital part of
the campus community, and they act as a valuable resource for students
setting
out on career, internship, and job searches.
Transfer students: Students
who are
members of Lambda Pi Eta and transfer to another school which has a
Chapter will automatically be a member of that school’s chapter.
In
order to ensure academic achievement, local chapters have the option of
increasing the national requirements listed above for transfer students
who wish to be new members of Lambda Pi Eta.
Graduate Students:
Graduate
students may continue as members of Lambda Pi Eta if they were
previously inducted by a chapter as an undergraduate, or they may be
inducted as new members if they would have met the membership
qualifications as an undergraduate at an institution which did not have
an active chapter of Lambda Pi Eta.
To be inducted during this academic
year, your application and dues payment must be received no later than
February 15th. For more
information, please contact
faculty advisor Lesley Withers, 350 Moore Hall, at
(989) 774-6673.
